So, this Is America!
Elfi Hornby
So, This is America! begins with Elfi's arrival in the US in 1949.
As a German, married to the 'black sheep' of a prominant family, and as a professional classical dancer landing in Omaha,
Nebraska, she has three strikes against her. In spite of a troubled marriage, widespread anti-German sentiments, rejection
by her in-laws, and the void of opportunities for a professional dancer, she carves a life for herself, her family, and
her career. At the height of her success, tragedy strikes. Hatred and prejudice add a last, devastating blow. Embittered,
she leaves Omaha with her children to find peace and healing in the beautiful Northwest.
So, This is America! is a moving, true story of a determined spirit,
and is a portrait of America in the mid-twentieth century.
