Suitable for 6-9 year olds. Fairwood Press, paperback, 8x10, 44 pages, $11.95 USD. CD $5.95 USD. Book and CD are available for $15.95 USD. LETTER TO A BULLY

©Chellis S. Jensen

He called her a name and others joined in

She tripped him on purpose-he fell on his chin

I watched all this happen but spoke not a word

I should have said something

But

I was afraid

Of getting hurt

Of being bullied, too

Of calling attention to myself

I was afraid to care or interfere

What would happen if I got bullied?

I’d want someone to help me

Someone to stand beside/behind me

Someone to care, even a stranger

Someone to defend me

I ‘m a human being

I have worth and value

I have a right to life like you and everyone else

My name may be funny

I may look funny or am handicapped

I may talk funny

I may not be smart

I may be too smart

You may have picked on me just for no reason at all

BUT you are no better or worse than me

What do you know about me?

I KNOW YOU….

You like to feel important

You want attention

You think putting someone down or being tough and strong will get you friends

You think putting someone down or being tough will make you important

You think people will think that you are smart

YOU ARE NOT!

You may try to hurt me or embarrass me, but the word is out.

Everyone is talking about you and you are no longer invisible or protected

Even the President of the United States knows about you

I am learning to be strong and there are others like me and we will be strong TOGETHER

There is still time to change, to come over to our side, to find a friend, to feel liked and appreciated

You’ll never know… unless you try it

Dear Chellis,

Aloha! We have thoroughly enjoyed your children’s book and read it all the time.

Ever since we got it last June, Jordyn can’t get enough of Mrs. Annathena.  She loves pronouncing her full name and now goes around giving all of us rhyming names too – Mama Wamma, Saigey Raigey, Dada  Fada, etc.  It has been a literary gem in increasing her vocabulary.  The fact that Jordyn, who just turned 3, can sit all the way through your chapter book and be riveted everypageis a compliment to your skill and talent in creating an interesting and character-building text for children.   Thank you for blessing us with the book and CD!

Christen Imig and family

Ps.  Anytime she rides in the car she insists on listening to the CD.

I really do like your book and plan to leave it with another counselor tomorrow and then get her reaction when I go there for her intern's next observations.   Glad to hear you are having good reactions to the book -- I do understand why!

-Celeste Sperl, former school counselor

I am the librarian here at ALPAC Elementary and would be happy to read the book to my students as well as post your letter.  I feel what you are doing is wonderful and kids really do need to hear this message.

Brenda Leyda, Teacher Librarian

Never have I had so much fun editing a book as when I worked with Author

Chellis Jensen on her (catchy-to-pronounce) book about Mrs. Annathena Gilly

Gully From Puddle Rumple Tilly Willy. It took me only three weeks of

practice to let the name roll off my tongue. I'm sure children do it in much

less time. This book is a jewel of a book for kids who love to smile and

have fun with words. Jensen is a topnotch wordsmith with the heart and

understanding of children of all ages.

-Val Dumond, Teacher, Editor, Author of Grammar For Grownups and Just Words.
